Cleaning house again. Originally posted 3/2/12. More applicable than ever, friends:
Just a thought…this week I keep hearing about yucky stuff that friends are going thru. I’ve had a few bumps lately as well (sometimes bumps can feel like mountains, eh?). It’s funny though, thru these yucky-stuff-times I’m seeing the words of James come alive. It’s actually crazy. I’m trying to do some memorizing…I laugh bc I’ve been stalled out at about 8 verses now for weeks. But, I also realize that God is quite possibly letting me camp out so it truly sinks in. Ya know, so it doesnt disappear like words on a spelling test do 5 days after the test.
Anyway, I had one of those moments last week that I emailed with some friends in my Bible study. I decided to post my “a-ha” moment here, too. Who knows, maybe your bumps/mountains are trapping you like mine can do. Maybe you need to hear a word like this today, too. I dunno. But, here ya go:
This week I’ve been overcome by a HUGE “A-HA” MOMENT of my own as I’ve been studying our James. It’s the notion in James 1:2 that James encourages us to “CONSIDER it a sheer gift friends, when you encounter tests and challenges of all kinds…” Um. I’ve never realized he doesn’t tell us: “Hey, you need to FEEL like the tests and challenges are a gift!” Because he knows full well that we cannot FEEL that…he encourages us to “consider it” with our minds, not our hearts. I’m reading between the lines here, but to me, I feel like it’s James throwing us a bone. He KNOWS we can’t always feel our painful struggles as gifts…we can’t feel something with a heart that is more than likely broken into pieces at the moment. But he can remind us to lean on what we KNOW.We can KNOW that our God has greater desires for us than just playing puppet to the painful stuff…He is making us into to His precious blessed ones who persevere…and are mature, lacking nothing.Click To Tweet
I wanna lack nothing…and sometimes that means relying on what I know, not what I feel. Have a great wkend, friends…and CONSIDER it a sheer gift.
“Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides. You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors. So don’t try to get out of anything prematurely. Let it do its work so you become mature and well-developed, not deficient in any way.
If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.” James 1:1-8 MSG
