An uncertain road, but one that I have no doubt is exactly where I’m supposed to be traveling right now. I’m writing/compiling/planning a Bible study on the book of John. I use all of those verbs bc it allows me to lean on the footnotes and references as I wade thru this…and because using the word “writing” sounds like I’m smart n stuff. “Compiling” sounds better. Let’s go with that.
At any rate, I’m starting to write the lesson outline/plan. My first task was to define the objectives of the WHY of it. WHY study the book of John??? Good question. I came up with my lil WHY narrative and sent it on for review to my churchy peers/leaders. And then I shared it with my favorite/most challenging critic: Brent.
His question to me stung a bit:
“OK…that’s fine for the church crowd. But, if you found yourself on an elevator with a stranger who asked you ‘WHY ARE YOU TEACHING/STUDYING THE BOOK OF JOHN?’ how would you answer that question before the elevator doors opened again?”
And suddenly, my nice lil description of “why” didnt fit so snugly anymore. Ya see, I was writing to the Bible study gals who are just shopping between which studies to do…the veteran church goers who are already sold.
Just like that, I realized, the idea of the “elevator pitch” is all about the nameless stranger getting the WHY of it. And so, to the friends in the elevator, here’s why I’m teaching/writing/studying John:
Because I’m a Christian and I want to live my life like Jesus did. If I’m going to try to do that, I want to know about how He lived His life.
It was written by Jesus’ best friend, John. Who knows more about how you live your life…for real…than your best friend?
Based on what I learn, I want to figure out how to use it in my day-to-day life.
It really is that simple. Why do I make it more complicated? Why do we season our purposes with fancy language and seemingly inviting word pictures when all we need is the bare bones truth?
Meet Him. Follow Him. Respond to Him. It’s that simple…like small talk in an elevator.
Curious? Join me…let’s jump in to John’s skin together and take a look at the who/what/when/where/how…and WHY of Jesus.
